Mwajib’s story
Mwajib had been part of the Education Matters sponsorship program since 2016. We got to know her through her father Yusuf, who does lots of voluntary work in his community in Katwe, a slum in the center of Kampala. Mwajib was born and grew up in this very slum. There he went to elementary school and also attended secondary school until her father could no longer afford the rising school fees shortly before she could get her degree. She was therefore forced to interrupt her schooling. Thanks to the sponsorship program, Mwajib was able to resume her schooling in 2016 and graduated in 2017 (comparable to the Abitur). She even received a recommendation for university. Mwajib is very determined and already knew at the time that she pictured her professional future in business and accounting.
At the beginning of 2018, she started her studies in accounting and business management at Ndejje University Kampala. Alongside her studies, she kept trying to further her education and did several internships in various schools. There, too, she realized time and again that she liked and enjoyed accounting. In 2022, she completed her bachelor's degree and her father organized a small celebration, as it is a rarity not only in the family but also in the neighborhood for a young woman to obtain a degree.
Following her studies, Mwajib attended an advanced course at the same university, which enabled her to work in an international context and gave her better job opportunities. Alongside the course, Mwajib worked in one of the schools where she had previously completed an internship.
After completing the follow-up course in 2023, Mwajib continued to work at the school where she is employed up to now. There she officially takes over all accounting tasks there. This includes keeping track of all expenses and income of the various cafeterias and kiosks on campus. She also keeps in touch with all of the school's suppliers and regularly compares the prices of all things needed to ensure the sustainability of the school's food supply.
